Slipknot is an American nu metal band from Des Moines, Iowa, which was formed in 1995. One of Slipknots trademarks are their "privacy" by using masks at public photos and film clips of performances. However, they have shown themselves without stitches on interviews and some of the band members, somm Corey Taylor and Jim Root, one can find in the band Stone Sour, and drummer Joey Jordison in the glam metal band Murderdolls. The only thing that has remained completely anonymous, and have not even talked in an interview, the pianist Craig Jones.

The band consists of nine members, and they are often called 0 to 8 instead of their real names are: Sid Wilson (DJ, turntables), Joey Jordison (drums), Paul Gray (bass), Chris Fehn (percussion), Jim Root ( guitar), Craig Jones (sampling and keyboards), Shawn Crahan (percussion), Mick Thompson (guitar) and Corey Taylor (vocals).

The first years

The band was founded by Paul Gray (bass), Shawn Crahan (percussion) and Andres Colsefini (singer) in Des Moines, Iowa. In the early years the band took many different names such as "The Pale Ones", "Pyg System" and "Meld" before they ended with Slipknot.

The first songs was created in 1993. Some of the songs on the album Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat, and other upcoming albums, was written at this time. Shawn Crahan was the drummer, and it was he who came upon the idea of having three drums in the band, when it created a powerful sound. They had their first concert in 1995 at a club called "The Love Shack." The band then performed without masks and called themselves "Pyg System". This was the only concert with guitarist Donnie Steele, who soon after left.

Roadrunner Records wanted to sign them, but only if they work more with the songs. Slipknot acquired when Corey Taylor as new Forsang. Anders was then relegated to playing the drums, which led him to quit.

In 1997 they finally signed with Roadrunner Records and released more then a demo; Roadrunner Records Demo, in 1998. This was printed in just under 2000 copies. The following year, in June 1999, their self-titled debut album, Slipknot released, produced by Ross Robinson. That same year the band toured on Ozzfest, and now began a regular fan base. The album was placed at No. 3 on the Billboard charts and ended up in first place in the United Kingdom.
