Ted and Victoria then strikes up, making that Robin is angry with Ted a number of episodes. But they skværer up to the end. Ted gets later a call from Love Solutions, a marriage consulting company, which previously struggled to find a suitable woman for him. They have finally found one that fits perfectly Ted. Barney loses a "slap bet", which permits Marshall to slap him in the face five times at any time in the future, when Marshall himself will, as he does twice during this season. It is also revealed that Barney has a gay, black brother named James. Barney takes a trip to California to join the game show "The Price Is Right", partly because he believes that the program manager Bob Barker is his biological father, although he did not actually say it. Eventually it is revealed that Robin was a Canadian tenårig pop star in the early 90's. Barney will slap the third time on Thanksgiving, which Marshall calls "Slush Thanksgiving."

It is clear that how Ted met the "mother" is through a story with the yellow umbrella, which he finds and takes in the episode "No Tomorrow". Ted attempts to woo Stella (Sarah Chalke (6 walls)), a dermatologist, he hit to remove an embarrassing tattoo. This culminates in a date, which contains small talk, dinner, a movie, coffee, two cab rides and a goodnight kiss, all in two minutes. At the end of the episode, Ted proposes to Stella.

In the episode "Ten Sessions", Stella reveals that she went to a party on St. Patrick's Day, which may have been the same Ted participated. Ted told their children that their future mother was at the party, but that they had not seen each other.

It is also strongly implied that Barney has feelings for Robin.

Season 4

The gang continues to mature now that they all have reached 30 years. Stella says "yes" to Ted's proposal of marriage, but leaves him at the altar to be with his father to his daughter, Tony. Ted skværer up with them over time. Barney struggles with his feelings for Robin. Company Barney is employed in, Goliath National Bank (GNB), move him over to management for new acquisitions, and Barney provides Marshall a job at the bank and a contract for Ted's firm to design GNB new headquarters in Manhattan.

Marshall and Lily have finally moved into her new apartment, but disagree about whether they are ready to have kids. Robin gets a new job in Japan, but he quickly up the job because it turned out to be even worse than her old job in the "Metro News One." She then returned to New York to be in Ted's wedding with Stella. Shortly after Robin comes back, she is cohabiting with Ted, and gets a job as a presenter for the 4:00 news after Barney sends her video resume to a number of media companies. Ted finds out about Barney's feelings for Robin while Ted and Robin all the time are with each other to avoid arguing about each other's bad habits. The tension starts to rise between Barney and Robin. Ted finds out Lily has sabotaged all the circumstances he has had with someone she has not been approved, and that she implied could have done that he broke up with Robin. Robin and Ted ends up talking about it, so that their friendship goes against a more positive tone.

Ted will be dismissed from designing GNBs new headquarters, resulting in him create his own independent company, baptizing "Mosbius Designs". Barney finally able to sleep with his two hundred women, and rub the news in the face of barndomsbøllen who taunted him and encouraged him to pursue it. The question then becomes what the driving force and motivation to continue in the same slot will be now. In the process, he is increasingly sure of his feelings for Robin.

As Ted carries the yellow umbrella, he found, he meets the Stella and Tony. Tony decides later to visit him to show his sympathy with Ted because he did not Stella. Tony offers him a job as architecture professor, which Ted rejected. Ted reveals that he does not miss Stella, and that he did not want anything to do with her after she left him at the altar. This leads to Tony turns up with Stella. Ted manages later to reunite the two who then move to California.

Lily leaves the gang and disappeared for four weeks after being exposed to a dirty joke from Barney (This was implemented because Alyson Hannigan (10 walls) who plays Lily would bear children). In the season finale Robin finds out about Barney's feelings for her, as she has for him. Ted decides he is finished as an architect, and choose instead to teach architecture. Final concludes that it is implied that the "mother" is a student in the class, Ted teaches in.
