Burg Katz is a castle above the German town of St. Goarshausen in Rhineland-Palatinate. The magnificent setting for the castle is on a ledge overlooking the Rhine. It was first built around 1371 (650 years ago) by Count Wilhelm II of Katzenelnbogen. The castle was bombarded in 1806 (215 years ago) and was re-built between 1896 (125 years ago) - 98. It is now privately owned, and not open for visitors. Name Though commonly known as Burg Katz, this is actually a contraction of Castle New Katzenelnbogen (German: Burg Neukatzenelnbogen) after the original Burg Katzenelnbogen. The name translates into English as Cat Castle, and so is popularly linked with that of the nearby Burg Maus, or Mouse Castle History of Wine In 1435 (586 years ago) the Counts of Katzenelnbogen were the first to plant Riesling in their vineyard. In fiction Burg Katz and its surrounds are the place of action for the Belgian comic book L'Orgue du Diable in the Yoko Tsuno series by Roger Leloup.
